Online Scientific Registration Form

   1999 Fusion Summer Study

   July 11-23, 1999
   Snowmass, Colorado

We ask all interested participants to register using this on-line form by Friday, April 9, 1999. Those registering for the 1999 Fusion Summer Study will be asked to submit a $100 "services fee" prior to arriving at Snowmass. This fee will help cover meeting and social expenses such as a "fusion rodeo", a weekend picnic, and refreshments during social hour. Registered participants will be mailed further details concerning this and other aspects of the meeting during April.

By completing this scientific registration form now, the working group convenors will be able to contact you prior to the Summer Study and enlist your participation with scientific and technical preparations for the meeting. This registration information is also needed to organize and to schedule working group activities and subtopical discussion sessions. If you plan to take an active role in the preparation of subtopical reports and presentations, you must register by Friday, April 9, 1999 using this form.

If you are not yet sure whether or not you will be able to attend all or part of the Fusion Summer Study, we ask that you still complete this form before April 9. Everyone registering using this form will be included automatically on our Snowmass email list. Snowmass email messages will keep you posted concerning (1) technical preparations for Snowmass, (2) travel tips and logistics, and (3) other Snowmass-related information and activities.

If your registration status changes, you should use this form to submit your revised registration information. Remember, (1) you must register using this form by April 9, 1999 if you wish to be a contributing member of a subtopical discussion group, and (2) Snowmass lodging reservations are made on an individual basis with the Snowmass Resort Village Association. Everyone interested in attending the 1999 Fusion Summer Study should make their lodging reservations as early as possible since availability of some types of accommodations is limited.

Instructions

This scientific registration form requires you to enter (1) your email address, (2) your plans for attending the Summer Study, (3) your mailing address and institutional affiliation, and (4) your willingness (or not) to help prepare the summary reports of as many as two of the many subtopical discussion groups.

After completing the form information below, click on the SUBMIT button at the bottom of this page. This will send your email address and registration information to the Organizers and Working Group Convenors of the Summer Study.

Participation Overview

Your participation in the 1999 Fusion Summer Study is welcome in many ways. At the very least, you will be able to engage your colleagues in a variety of formal and informal discussions on the technical basis for fusion's next decade. If you wish, you may also (1) help prepare the oral and written summary reports of one or two subtopical discussion groups and/or (2) submit a short written paper, based on your Snowmass work, for inclusion in the Snowmass Proceedings. In order to help accommodate your interests, we ask that you indicate your preferences below by selecting among the subtopical discussion groups in the following menus and check-boxes.

Before making your selections, you should examine our schedule.

The work of the Fusion Summer Study is organized into two types of working groups: fusion concept working groups (meeting in the mornings) and cross-cutting issues working groups (meeting in the afternoons). The three fusion concept working groups provide a forum for experts of related approaches to fusion to work together and identify the important issues to be faced for concept development during the next decade. These groups are: Emerging Fusion Concepts, Magnetic Confinement Fusion Concepts, and Inertial Confinement Fusion Concepts. The three cross-cutting working groups address topics of general importance often emphasizing those issues in common to more than one fusion concept. These working groups are: Plasma Science, Technology Issues, and Energy Issues.

In order to be able to present a report of discussions and working group conclusions by the end of the summer study, we will follow an open, two-step process. During the first week, subtopical discussion groups prepare answers to key questions pertaining to fusion's next decade. These questions were selected by the working group convenors in order to focus and to facilitate discussions. The schedules of presentations within the working groups and within the subtopical discussion groups will be determined by the convenors in conjunction with subgroup participants. After the weekend, representatives from each of the various subtopical discussion groups will report progress and any interim conclusions during plenary sessions on Monday, July 19. During the second week, the subgroups and working group convenors (1) work to resolve remaining issues and concerns raised during the midweek plenary, and (2) integrate the subgroup reports into six working group reports. These working group reports will be presented and thoroughly discussed on Thursday, July 22. On the final day of the the Fusion Summer Study, the working groups will present final summary reports to FESAC and representatives from DOE.

Written reports from the working groups, subtopical groups, and individual authors will be collected one month after Snowmass. These will be published as a CD-ROM and form the Proceedings of the 1999 Fusion Summer Study.

Working Groups and Subtopical Discussion Groups

The working group convenors have organized subtopical groups to facilitate discussion and analysis concerning the key scientific and technical issues of each working group. These subtopical discussion groups are intended as the primary focus of activities at the Fusion Summer Study.

Although every participant attending Snowmass is free to attend any and all discussion sessions, we ask that you help our planning efforts by indicating your primary interests and areas of expertise in participating within subtopical discussion groups.

The subtopical discussion groups for each working group is listed below along side a check-box. Descriptions of the subtopical discussion groups, key areas of focus, and key questions are presented on hyperlinked web pages. Using the form below, please select no more than six (6) subtopical discussion groups and indicate to the working group convenors your interests and desires to participate in subtopical group activities.

Contributing Participants of Subtopical Groups

Contributing participants of subtopical discussion groups work closely with the working group convenors to prepare the oral and written summaries of the Summer Study. These reports become the permanent record of the conclusions of our work and discussion. They also serve as the basis of our final reports which will be presented on the last day of Snowmass. In order to make most effective use of everyone's time and effort, contributing participants of a subtopical group must be present and take an active role in the subgroup's discussions. For this reason, you may be a contributing participant to at most one morning subtopical group and at most one afternoon subtopical group. Contributing participants of the subtopical discussion groups will also work prior to arrival at Snowmass and assist with the gathering of materials, including topical white papers and summaries of key issues. The working group convenors and liaisons for the subtopical groups will be posting most of this information on the WWW.

If you wish to become a contributing participant in one of the fusion concept subtopical groups meeting in the morning and/or in the afternoon, please select one of the menu options below.

I volunteer to serve as a contributor to the morning subtopical discussion group.

I volunteer to serve as a contributor to the afternoon subtopical discussion group.
